When I finished Play by Kylie Scott, I had an inkling that with Deep, Ben Nicholson would dethrone Mal as the top dog in the series. That didn’t exactly happen because I can’t choose one above the other. It just can’t be done – does that make me a groupie? So, I finally realized that with the Stag Dive series, it’s hard to pick a favorite band-member and love interest, but there’s something in the older guy and younger off-limits girl story line that always seem to call to me, and the premise of Ben and Lizzy Rollins connection and predicament is all the more enticing. With the series conclusion, Ben finally has his day to be front and center in the story line and show off his charming personality and loyal nature. While I love Ben, Lizzy really stole the show for me. She plays off everyone in this little crowd of rock gods +ones ( or +twos) <wink wink>. So, with Lizzy Rollins firmly in his orbit, Ben’s life gets really interesting.
Due to some weird band rule, cuddling up to Lizzy is a no-no. And like the other couples, they can’t help what they feel and can’t hide it. Deep is all about Ben and Lizzy quashing their feelings for each other. Lizzy Rollins is the voice in the story and what a voice it is. Lizzy is smart, snarky, and brave. She tells it how it is and is not afraid to let Ben have it when he deserves it. Getting the story through Lizzy’s eyes made it all the more entertaining because the.girl.is.funny. Her attitude really stole the show and through Lizzy’s voice, Kylie Scotts’ writing shines. The dialogue is absolutely stellar. It’s natural and makes this story one of those reads that you can’t stay away from – its an effortless read that goes by all too quickly. Being a romance, we share moments that are fun, sexy, filled with jealousy and heartbreak. These moments are so clearly captured making this is another example is where Kylie’s writing is simply outstanding.
Kylie Scott does it again. I’m HUGE fan of the Stage Dive series. While the genre of Rockers is nowhere near new, Scott certainly makes her characters so thoroughly three-dimensional, flawed, and redeemable. Not to mention, you fall in love with them. Seriously, I just wanted to climb Ben…that mountain of man! Add in Lizzy, the smarta$$ extraordinaire who chased the man of her dreams and walked away from their encounter with more than just a memory…well, it’s just explosive. And infuriating. And AWESOME!
I’m drawn to female characters who are not perfect, but can be strong for themselves and others. Well, no weak and simpering females in this novel or series. And the men? Well, they are beautifully flawed. But, when they love, they love wholly and with a fiery passion. Take Ben – a man who is living his dream on the wings of a whim. He’s playing and creating music every day. That’s all he’s ever wanted. Then, lo and behold…little Lizzy turns everything upside down.
I found her decision to chase after her man both admirable and a bit stupid. You always hear the contrary clichés ad nauseam…
“Grab life by the horns”
“Go big or go home”
“Men are all about the chase”
It’s quite the conundrum. If you put yourself out there, you could fall on your face. However, without the risk, there is no reward. Well, she took a chance, but gets hurt in the process. If I had to pick one sentiment over the other, I’ll go with the admirable. What she chose to do is representative of her fighter spirit. Lizzy showed that even when she got knocked down (or knocked up), she wouldn’t stay down for long.
This novel has a grittier feel to it. There are no struggles with addiction, but the fight to the happy ending is quite a rough and tumble time. There were a few moments when I actually worried there would be no happy ending! Though this novel could be stand alone, it really does make the best sense if the other novels are read in order first. All the members of Stage Dive and their leading ladies make appearances and are intricately woven into the story. Understanding their personalities and quirks will help bring the book into Technicolor.
Don’t miss this great read – or any other novel in the Stage Dive series! They are all highly recommended!
